Our Vision for Sport

Our vision for the school is to see sport integrated across the curriculum, with healthy living being emphasised in lessons and encouraged outside of school. Every child deserves the opportunity to access sport in school and the chance to compete and represent their school. With this in mind we are now arranging more match fixtures than ever in a vast range of sports.

Excellence in the teaching of sports is also key to our vision and as such we are investing heavily in training for teachers in order to further enhance the profile of sport within the school. We also have a designated member of staff who runs sports enrichment at lunchtime and in the afternoons.

We aim to create a buzz around PE lessons and to increase participation in extra-curricular sports clubs run by the school and those in the local community. We strive to make our sports clubs competitive, with children taking great pride in representing their school and looking to win. We would also like to increase the participation of parents within sports at the school, whether encouraging their child to take part in sport or offering to share their sporting skills.

As a school engaged in a vast number of competitive sports fixtures, our vision is to create a winning mentality across the whole school and to see our children developing a team ethos as they engage in such events. We want to be a competitive school that sends its most able children to these fixtures to compete accordingly.

Projects and sports development

We have developed our inter house sports to give children from every year group the opportunity to play each other competitively throughout each term which helps to create enthusiasm and excitement related to sport. Our sports board located in the KS2 playground displays news, photos, fixtures and results. In addition, the  in-school PE board displays each year group's PE activities for the term and has photos to inform parents of what their children have been learning.

Last year we successfully created a sports council which meets fortnightly to discuss sporting issues for the schools and shares ideas to improve the school sport as the term progresses. This gives children a voice in the future of PE and sport at Epsom Downs Primary School.

We run an annual PE week in the summer, which includes sports day at Headley Drive and integrates sport into all lessons in some way. Our last sports week was a huge success with workshops and guest speakers throughout the week with the focus on disabled sports.
