Impact of Sports Premium Funding 2016-2017

In 2013 the Government introduced Sports Premium Funding to enable schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer, to develop and add to existing sports and enhance the opportunities for sport for current and future pupils. The Sports Premium Funding has enabled us to reshape the dynamic of sport across the school. We have bought new equipment, external coaches have come in to teach Years 4 & 5 tennis and tag rugby, training has been provided for staff to enhance their knowledge, understanding and delivery of the PE curriculum and two members of staff have completed their level 1 gymnastics coaching badges. Our enthusiasm and diversity in sport continues to grow – in 2013 we were running only 5 extracurricular sports clubs involving 85 children and now we are able to offer 16 sports clubs through the year with 228 children participating in a variety of sports including football, gymnastics, volleyball, field-hockey, skipping, netball, dodgeball and table tennis. There is also provision for our gifted and talented children enabling them to progress further. We now have a sports enrichment coordinator to help run both the afterschool and lunchtime sports clubs, including the ‘change4life’ club which aims to engage children who do not have a sporty background or do not have access to sports outside school.

We regularly take part in many different sporting fixtures and tournaments with increasing levels of success including football, tag-rugby, gymnastics, multi-skills, indoor athletics, netball, tennis, dodgeball, cross country and cricket. As a result of this we were awarded the Sainsbury’s Gold Award for sport in 2015. We have used the funding to improve many of our sports facilities, the latest of which was the installation of new basketball nets and netball posts in our playground. This has helped to increase participation in these sports and created a real enthusiasm to be active. In addition to this, several course were undertaken in the last year to enhance further the CPD of practitioners at the school, such as Tri Golf, Boxing and Tennis.

With the funding we have been able to bring in external sporting bodies to support in our delivery of sport as a school. Sustainable improvement has already begun to be achieved through the use of CPD training of our staff, consolidating and making new links with local sports clubs and coaches enabling us to provide extensive after school clubs, in school sessions and training for children and also for staff. In addition we are using the funding to ensure we have up to date equipment so children can access a large range of sports equipment and sports. We have successfully implemented a sports leadership programme across years 5 and 6 with some of this funding which in turn has seen children being given the opportunities to run sports activities with children lower down the school in addition to developing high quality skills which they will take with them through their school life. Part of the funding has helped us in the delivery of our successful sports weeks which have included focuses on disabled sport and also the importance of health and wellbeing.

Children continue to be highly engaged and motivated by Sport here at Epsom Downs and the funding is intrinsic in them being able to gain the very best sporting provision possible for their development.
